1. The No Catch Co. (๐ Best in Brighton)

๐งผ Hygiene rating: 5 (May 2022)
Located just by the i360 on the seafront, No Catch has quickly become the go to favourite for vegan fish and chips in Brighton (and beyond!). Their “fish” is made with tofu where they are achieving a surprisingly realistic texture, it also contains seaweed which gives it a fishy aroma and hints of the sea. The batter is spot-on, replicating that satisfying crunch that everyone loves. You also get the choice between cod and haddock, as well as a range of sides, such as vegan calamari! Iโd highly recommend trying out the jumbo saveloy too, which I prefer over the fish! This is place really slaps and you probably won’t even realise it’s vegan fish and chips!
Note that the chips at No Catch are more โpub styleโ (triple cooked) rather than classic โchippy chipsโ, but theyโre still delicious.

Pretty much always regarded as the best fish and chips in town by locals – Jack Fullers in Kemptown also offer vegan “NoFish & Chipsโ. This tasty alternative features tofu marinated with vegan pesto and gherkin, wrapped in nori (seaweed), and coated in a light chilli and lime batter. This place is well-known locally for lunch offers and shareable meal boxes.
If youโre in the mood for something less traditional, try their jackfruit scampi, seasoned with lemon and herbs, then panko-fried to perfection. The menu also includes spicy cauliflower wings, loaded chips with meatless mince, and halloumi panko fries. And don’t miss out on their delicious mushy peas, vegan curry sauce, vegan mango mayo, and vegan tartare.
This place is an absolute necessity for plant-based foodies! Note that they only have a few tables outside, so be prepared to take away. Whilst youโre at it, why not read this helpful guide on How to not get your chips stolen by seagulls!

Locally famous for their mouth watering plant-based burgers and crispy “chicken,” Oowee Vegan also offer something for seafood lovers (vegan or not!). Nestled amongst their enticing menu options are classic fish and chips, featuring a crispy golden batter encasing a flaky Omni plant-based fish fillet.
If youโre in the mood for a burger, the “Ocean Burger” features the same innovative fish alternative in a breadcrumb crust nestled within a bun with classic toppings. Pair either option with onion rings, cauli bites, and their rich gravy for a guilt-free, seaside-inspired feast.

Whilst this isn’t exactly vegan fish and chips, Nano do have a few decent vegan and vegetarian options which does come close. They are actually nnown locally for their gluten-free menu (certified by Coeliac UK). If you’re a vegan and you’re looking for a chippy tea, check out the vegan battered sausage (my favourite) which are fantastic and the homemade pea fritters are really good too. For vegetarians, they also had a Pukka cheese and onion slice on display when I popped in, which will always have a special place in my heart! Nano also offers sides suitable for vegans/veggies such as pickled onions, gherkins, or eggs to complete your chippy tea. Whilst Iโd personally skip the (admittedly average) veggie burger, the fritters and sausages are great. I highly recommend checking Nano out if youโre in the area.
5. The Little Anchor Fish and Chip Shop (Update: CLOSED) ๐๏ธ
Address: 3A Upper Hollingdean Rd, Brighton, BN1 7GA
The Little Fish and Chip Shop were previously well known for their plant-based menu, however they are currently closed. The last update was on Instagram where they confirmed this and stated that the restaurant was up for sale on 30th August 2023. Note that the business status is still โActiveโ on Company House, as of July 2024. So hereโs hoping The Little Fish and Chip Shop makes a return. It was previously regarded as some of the best vegan fish and chips in Brighton, which breaks my heart!

Why is Vegan Fish and Chips Becoming Popular?
Half of the UK’s “top 10” fish stocks, including North Sea cod, are considered overfished or critically low in population size, according to Oceanaโs 2023 report โTaking Stockโ. This is leading many people to seek out sustainable alternatives. Vegan fish and chips is a new way to enjoy the classic dish without harming the ocean, or the fish.
Whilst plant-based โmeatโ substitutes have been around for a while now, fish (and cheese) has always been something that is harder to replicate. However, some restaurants are finding creative ways to imitate the texture and taste of fish, and it just so happens that some of the best are here in Brighton. Check out this helpful list for you to try.
